JAVEA INTERNATIONAL BAPTIST CHURCH
Church Profile

Javea International Baptist Church was inaugurated in December 1995 as an offshoot of the Spanish Baptist church in the neighbouring town of Denia. The church seeks to serve the spiritual needs of the ever-increasing English speaking population in Javea and the surrounding area. The population figures are in a constant state of flux as the area is developed in line with much of the Costa Blanca coastline. It is estimated that there are approx. 32,000 registered residents in the Javea, of which some 15,000 are registered as Spanish. The registered British population is about 7,500.  However the figures are clouded by the fact that much of the accommodation is only occupied by holiday makers or home owners visiting second properties. This reflects the desire of many foreign nationals to spend time in this beautiful part of Spain.

Javea itself is a charming Spanish town, with an attractive port and a large sandy beach, which is only really crowded at Easter and during the months of July and August.

The adjacent Montgo mountain offers commanding views of the rugged coastline and breathtaking sunsets in the nearby Jalon Valley, resplendent with almond and olive trees and countless orange and lemon groves. This part of Spain is commended by the World Health Organisation as one of the best places to live and many retirees have taken up residencies here. As the population has grown however, so too have the number of younger families moving into the area.

Our church attendances reflect much of the demography referred to above. In the last few years the church has been obliged to move into larger and larger temporary accommodation as numbers have grown to over one hundred worshippers on occasions. Church membership currently stands at over 60, but there are many other regular attendees whose commitments in their home countries prevent them from playing a permanent part in the life of our church. Besides our welcome holidaymakers, who might come from various parts of the world, our regular congregation is often American, British, Columbian, Chinese, Dutch, German and South African in origin. The backgrounds of our congregation are varied, with several having previous connections to Baptist, Anglican, Methodist, United Reform, Catholic, Elim Pentecostal, Brethren and other denominations. The church seeks to support missionary work in Spain as well as overseas, is independently financed and affiliates to the Baptist Union of Great Britain.

The Constitution emphasises acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, the Authority of Scripture and the importance of Believer's Baptism.

Regular weekday activities include prayer meetings, several weekly home groups including a multi-cultural English/Spanish speaking group, and a praise and worship group. Fellowship is also an important part of our church life .

There is much on which to build as the church seeks to reach out further into the English speaking multi-cultural population.
